Hanoi was burning hot, and my dad was also burning for a final family trip before my brother went to college in the United States. That’s why going to Ha Giang—a cool, misty, mountainous province in northern Vietnam—seemed like a perfect idea. Yes, a perfect idea, except we had no idea how the trip was going to unfold.
